Advice or no advice
Whether to seek professional advice
Some people like to do their own shopping around; others prefer to get a mortgage broker or adviser to do it for them. Not sure which suits you? Here are some things to consider.Getting mortgage advice Getting a mortgage without advice
Getting mortgage advice
Remember - only FSA authorised firms and their agents are allowed to give advice on a mortgage and they must follow our rules when dealing with you.
This means you have a right to expect the adviser to only recommend a mortgage suitable for you, based on the information you have given them.
If an authorised firm gives you advice that's wrong for your circumstances, there is a system to resolve complaints and, if necessary, put things right.
Make sure you check out our tips on shopping around.
Even when getting advice, you still have responsibilities. Read the Key Facts document headed 'About this mortgage' and make sure you understand the mortgage you are being offered. Always ask questions if you're unsure.
The Key Facts 'About our mortgage services' will tell you whose mortgages the firm offers, which service they're providing - advice or not, and what you'll have to pay for the advice service.
Getting a mortgage without advice
You don't have to take advice before you take out a mortgage, you can shop around yourself using our mortgage tables/calculators and comparing the Key Facts 'About this mortgage' documents from different mortgage lenders.
